Import and work with DXF objects
Updated over 3 months ago

You can import 2D and 3D objects from DXF files into a Neara project, and work with them a number of ways, using the DXF Manager:

  • Place and visualize them in the Perspective, Schematic, and Plan views

  • Inspect the object's layers

  • Change the color and visibility of individual layers in the object

  • Align other model object to the imported objects with the Snap tool

  • Download a copy of the object from the project.

Open the DXF Manager

Select Project menu / DXF Manager; or click (+) at the end of any group of tabs and select DXF Manager on the popup.

The DXF Manager tab will open. You might find it convenient to move and dock it into a panel to the side of the Perspective and other views:

Import a DXF object

Select + Import Files option on the DXF Manager, and drag-and-drop a valid .dxf file from your device into the drop box on the right hand side of the panel:

You can drag-and-drop multiple .dxf files; and also click on the drop box area to show a standard file browser.

Neara will upload and process the file. Depending on the size and complexity of the DXF this may take a moment or two.

When ready, the file will be listed in the left-hand side of the DXF Manager, and loaded into the Perspective view:

To import another DXF, click the + Import files option on the left-hand side of the DXF Manager and drag-and-drop (or select) another file.

Quickly locate an imported object

Click the Zoom to icon next to the object's name in the DXF Manager. The Perspective view will re-orient to its location:

Position an object

You'll notice in this example that the imported lines are not positioned correctly. Orbiting the camera in the 3D Perspective view reveals the objects have incorrect x, y, and z positions with respect to the design center and ground:

Objects imported from a DXF retain their x, y, and z positions but may need to be adjusted to ground level, or to match the project's Design Coordinates.

You can use the Clamp to ground options in the DXF Manager to align specified layers, or all layers of the imported object with the ground.

  • In the DXF Manager, select the imported file, and select the Layers tab on the right-hand side of the panel. Using the Clamp to ground column enable the checkbox of the layers you want to clamp to ground:

  • In the DXF Manager, select the imported file, and select the Properties tab on the right-hand side of the panel. Using the Clamp to ground option, enable the checkbox to clamp the entire structure to the ground:

You can also use the Offset options to adjust design coordinates with greater control. In the DXF Manager, select the imported file, and select the Properties tab on the right-hand side of the panel. Adjust the X, Y, and Z Offset values to correctly position the objects in the project:

Show or hide an object

Click the Eye icon next to the object's name in the DXF Manager to toggle the visibility of an imported object in the Perspective view:

Show or hide layers inside an object

Select the imported object in the left-hand side of the DXF Manager, and then select the Layers tab on the right-hand side.

All layers in that object are listed. Click the Eye icon next to a layer to toggle the visibility of just that layer in the Perspective view:

Example of a text layer in an object visible:

Example of that text layer's visibility toggled off:

Show or hide all text

On an imported object's Properties tab, use the Show Text checkbox to toggle visibility of all text from all layers in the object in the Perspective, Schematic, Plan, and Profile views:

This is useful for those cases where one or more layers have both lines and text, and you need to hide the text while retaining the object's lines on screen.

Zoom to a layer inside an object

On an imported object's layer's tab, click the Layer Name to zoom directly to that layer in the Perspective, Schematic, Profile, and Plan views:

Change the color of a layer inside an object

By default Neara will display the imported objects using the colors defined when the object was created.

You can override the color of an individual layer by selecting a different color in the color picker for that layer:

Here is an example where the DXF has different colours for objects on the same layer:

You can click on one of the lines within this layer and in the properties a table is shown with the selected layers. From here you can select the colour for everything on the layer. Note colors can also be changed through the Layers tab in the DXF Manager.

In this example everything on layer "53" was coloured blue.

To remove a color override applied to a layer, select the white square with red diagonal line through it option, in the color picker for that layer:

Select and inspect layers directly in other views

When browsing your network in the Perspective and other views, if you select an item from a layer in an imported object, the main Properties tab will provide information and options to manipulate the selected layer - even when the DXF Manager isn't open:

For example if you wanted to hide the blue and green lines for this DXF you could click on them in perspective view:

Then you can toggle the visibility of the layer to remove it from view.

And now those layers are not visible anymore.

To avoid accidentally selecting layers in an imported object, expand the Selectable types section of the Properties tab and un-check the DXF files option:

Export the layer list

Download the list of layers inside an imported object, using the export menu on the object's Layers tab. Export is available in CSV and MS Excel file formats:

Measure clearance to an imported object

Use the Clearance Measurement tool on the toolbar to measure the distance between elements in the object and other assets in your project, such as Obstructions and Poles.

First click on the asset, and then move the mouse to part of the imported object. The clearance measurements will be displayed in real time:

Note you can also use the ctrl key to find any distance to any part of the DXF.

Snap model objects to imported objects

Use the Snap tool on the toolbar to position other assets in your project, such as conductors and poles based on position of imported objects.

First click on the asset, then select the appropriate Snapping option from the Properties panel. Ensure that the Snap to control for 3D Objects is set to Vertices only (discreet points) or Full (anywhere).

Move your mouse to the part of the imported object you want to snap to and left-click to move the asset.

Download an imported object

Download an imported object as a DXF file to your device using the Download option next to the object's name in the DXF Manager:

Remove an imported object from the project

Click the Delete icon next to the object's name in the DXF Manager to remove it completely from the project:

You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. It will be removed from the Perspective view and the DXF Manager.
