Model an obstruction

Such as buildings and fences, to check clearances

Updated over 8 months ago

The Obstruction tool on the toolbar is used to place obstructions such as buildings and fences, making it easy to check your conductor clearances to the model:

Supported obstruction shapes

Obstructions that can be simplified to either a fence, a prism, or a cylinder can be modelled in Neara.

Prism

Any object that can be modelled as a prism can be modelled using the prism obstruction type. It defaults to a height of 8m, with floor height ground level and being shaped as a rectangular prism. However, all of these are modifiable (see Modifying an obstruction below):

Reshape a prism

The vertices list the location of all floor height vertices and each one can be moved to a precise location by editing its text field in the Properties panel after selecting the obstruction. They can also be removed using the (x) buttons, or added using the Insert after option.

You can also click-and-drag on the dots on the prism's vertices to reshape it:

Cylinder

The Cylinder obstruction type works in a similar way to the Prism type, with the option to modify Height and Radius in the Properties panel in the sidebar:

Fence

The Fence obstruction type works in a similar way to the Prism type, with the option to modify Height and Width in the Properties panel in the sidebar:

Place an obstruction

  1. Select the Obstruction tool on the toolbar

  2. Define the New Obstruction Type to place in the Properties panel in the sidebar: Prism, Cylinder or Fence

  3. Left-click to place the obstruction in the Perspective view

Move an obstruction

To move an obstruction, click to select it, and drag it to a new location.

Modify an obstruction

You can modify an obstruction's shape after it is placed and selected:

  • Give it a descriptive, meaningful name

  • Drag its vertices to fit a general shape

  • Define precise eastings and northings, and roof and floor heights in the Properties panel in the sidebar:

Move multiple objects

By combining multiple objects, you will be able to model a wide variety of shapes to fit whatever obstructions you may encounter on site. To move a group of related obstructions, select the Move and Select tool on the toolbar, and then click-and-drag to select all and drag them to a new location in the Perspective view:

Delete an obstruction

To delete an obstruction, switch to the Select tool on the toolbar, select the obstruction, and press DEL / DELETE on your keyboard.
