Load and unload large point cloud datasets; configure point color and density

Can't see your point cloud?

If you can't see your point cloud in the Perspective view, check its visibility option. On the Layers tab, make sure the visibility (eye) icon to the left of that point cloud is turned on.

Note: like in this example, you may have multiple point clouds available in your project - check you have turned on the correct one(s):

Load and unload point cloud data

For performance reasons, Neara does not normally automatically load datasets (point cloud, Engineering models, ...) into the Perspective view.

If you have turned on the visibility for a point cloud, and still do not see your point cloud in the Perspective view, you may need to use the Datasets tool to manually load it.

Click the Datasets tool on the toolbar and then click on an area in the Perspective view to load dataset data into that area:

When the Datasets tool is active, you can modify the size of the area loaded with the Load Radius option in the Properties tab:

Inspect point data

Click on a point in the Perspective view. Information about that point will be displayed in the Properties tab:

By default and for performance reasons, additional metadata about each point is not loaded.

To reveal the detailed LiDAR metadata for a point including: classification code, per-point color, intensity, return number, number of returns, scan direction flag, edge of flight line, scan angle rank and scanner channel - click the respective Load options on that tab:

Changing the point coloring

If your point cloud is displayed in black and white, you may need to set the Point coloring option on the View menu:

Classification

This option will colorize points by their classification code e.g. fence, conductor, pole, vegetation, ... etc. and will apply a standard color scheme.

Points classified as pole, stay/guy, and crossarm are colored brown in the point cloud display. Special elements are colored yellow. Buildings are colored blue. Vegetation is colored green.

Points classified as conductor are magenta/purple before a conductor is fitted to them. Once fitted, they will turn grey to show the conductor is accurately modelling the points.

Map overlay

This option will colorize points by the underlying map overlay colors (for example, Google Maps). This can useful to create a more realistic view of vegetation and structures. Classes such as conductor and pole will still use the standard color scheme:

If your project does not have a map overlay, you can add one.

Timestamp

If this option is available, use it to visualize when different LiDAR captures were performed in an area over time:

When this option is selected, you can control the coloring by time range, and also filter points by time range:

Additional Dataset configuration

The Dataset configuration section of the Datasets tab, available when the Datasets tool is selected on the toolbar, provides options to configure each dataset imported:

For each dataset you can define the:

  • Model density: define the density of each classification: the number of points you want to render. If your device is running slow, or some classifications are not needed, you can reduce their density - or turn them off completely by moving the slider to its lowest setting.

  • View: toggle a classification's View checkbox if you want to make the LiDAR point cloud viewable in the design or not. It is typically good practice to turn the View off for Ground points to avoid making the display too busy, and to make it easier to see the map overlay.

Add a dataset

Click the Add Dataset option to bring in another LIDAR file - such as an adjacent file that has already been uploaded:

Orange-highlighted point cloud classes

If you have orange-colored highlighted point cloud classes displayed on the Layers panel under a Point Cloud dataset:

this indicates that your model contains poles whose Z coordinate automatically moves with the terrain.

This message will appear below the list of classes on the Layers panel:

This will occur if any of the poles have the Derive from terrain option checked, found on the Pole Properties panel:
