Set up Simulations for use with FEA
Updated over 9 months ago

Using the Simulations menu

The Simulations menu works with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) panel to determine the type of simulation.

About setting up simulations using Formulas

In addition to setting up simulations using this menu, you can also setup and run simulations with Neara Formulas:

  • simulate_strain_section_fea

  • simulate_structure_fea

  • simulate_structure_broken_wires

See Engineering operations, calculations, and simulations in the Formula Language Reference section.

The FEA panel

To populate the Simulation menu, first open the FEA panel by clicking (+) next to the Properties panel in the sidebar, and on the popup click FEA under the Tools section:

The FEA panel will be shown and depending on your setup you may see different Simulations to those shown here:

Simulations have a one-to-one relationship with Environments defined in the Environments menu

Configuring Simulations

To view and modify the Simulations available, click the Simulations menu item:

The Simulation table shows:

Label

The environment label can be determined in the environment tab

Start Condition

Displays whether any creep or preload permanent deformations are used as initial deformation for strain sections.

  • If Cr is visible then simulation uses permanent creep deformation as initial conditions for conductors.

  • If Ld is visible then simulations uses the worst permanent deformation arising from simulations marked with Is Load.

  • If both Cr/Ld are visible then worst deformation of creep and preload simulations is used.

Perpendicular

Select this option to simulate each of 2 perpendicular to span wind directions. If this is unchecked you will be able to enter arbitrary number of Wind dirs instead.

Wind Dirs

Defines the number of global wind directions that are simulated. Minimum number of simulated wind directions is 4 (coinciding with N, E, S, and W directions).

If greater than 4 then wind rose is divided in equal parts, thus if you want to simulate cardinal directions and additional ones found on the wind rose then keep the number of wind directions divisible by 4.

Is Load

Marks the simulation as preload simulation that is used as Start condition of simulations that apply preload simulations.
